Before we even start this article, I must say that this is in direct opposition of Jay Pindipol and his anti-band agenda. Mind you, this is the same person who plays every single band instrument known to bandkind!
So before you even TOUCH his article, understand that ou are consuming the writing of a very biased individual.
And so we begin, the Band vs. Orchestra Wars! To start us off, how about we list some reasons why you should join band:
You can find your place in band!
In the words of my classmate, Sukhman Kaur (9), "You can find your place in band." She said this in response when I asked her what music program she would join if she had the opportunity. Of course, she said band! When I asked her why, she said it was because band has so many different options. I'd have to agree with her. Within the large umbrella of band, there are tens of different instruments, so many to the point that you are bound to find one that piques your interest. From the simple flute to the contrabass flute (a hellishly big flute), band has everything your heart may desire. Additionally, band doesn't just include band classes, it also includes Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Winter Percussion. In fact, you can join any of these programs without being in the class! Overall, the variety of band allows for any new member to find their place amongst it all!
Band will make you more athletic!
If you want to gain more physical capabilities without actually working out, then join band. Obviously if you do join Marching Band, then you will gain more endurance while also having fun through the beautiful art that is playing music. Additionally, given that you have to carry around a heavy brass instrument, you'll look tough while also building up those band-gains. Plus, band might even make you a better swimmer. As said by the new student teacher from Rutgers, Ms. Duarte, "You'll be a pro breather in band!" After all, band itself constantly utilizes your lungs, rapidly expanding your breath capacity.
Band just has more aura!
Band will always be cooler than orchestra. When comparing a saxophone and a violin, you already know that the saxophone will look 100x cooler. There's just no comparison. Plus, a marching band uniform will always look more tough than anything that could be mustered by an orchestra student. Band simply exudes aura, and it is why a student who has played violin her entire life, Mahi Patel (9) has plans to join Winter Percussion next year. Simply put, if you want to aura farm in every direction you head, just pick band. An instrument that can vary between genres of rock and jazz will always show up the instrument that is only truly capable of classical music. As stated by a premium band kid, Rishab Patel (9), "Band has better diversification of tones, orchestra only has 4 or 5 tones. Band has better potential with dynamic and tonal contrast." He's a bit of a band nerd, but he's not lying!
Band kids have more fun!
Band will always keep you on the edge of your seat! From singing on the Marching Band bus to playing with your friends, band has it all. Generally, band just has cooler members. You're bound to make a crazy friendship in band that'll keep your stories full for a lifetime. In the loud and chaotic band room, you will experience endless amounts of laughter. There is simply a way in which the room fills up with sound that has the ability to make one feel happiness. And to experience it, I guess you'll just have to become a band kid yourself! Even Rosselin Hernandez (9), a lifelong chorus student has begun to play trombone! She herself says that she "[misses] marching band season. It was so fun!" Overall, the equation is simple: more band = more fun.
Band sounds better than orchestra!
Honestly, this is just a genuine fact. Orchestra is soft and is made only for classical tunes. Band, on the other hand, has an incredible amount of duality. Classical, jazz, rock, swing, and so many more genres can be achieved with a band instrument. An orchestra instrument could never. Plus, there will always be more differing instruments in band than orchestra. We know how to fill up a room!
All in all, band has proved itself time and time again to be better than orchestra. So before you go ahead and read Jay's subpar article for comparison, understand this simple fact. If you think band is better, then like my article. If you think orchestra is better, then like Jay's article. You should know what the correct choice is. After all, orchestra is just a band with a broken budget for brass.
So, like this article and choose band over orchestra any day of the week!
