Senior Speech: Yusuf Jallow

Good afternoon, everyone. I want to truly thank you all for coming out to show love and support today.

Before I begin, I want to thank Mayor Womack, Dr. Zychowski, Ms. Hayley Toth, Mr.Kneller, the administration and faculty of North Brunswick Township High School, and my family and friends for your time, effort, and guidance through these four years.

Sitting here today, it’s easy to feel like we’re supposed to have everything figured out just because we’re graduating. But the truth is, a lot of us are still figuring it out as we go. For me, there are moments when I question if I’m truly ready to step into the real world on my own. After high school, there won’t always be teachers, friends, or structure to lean on, and that can be intimidating.

Along the way, I’ve been lucky to have people who guided me through that uncertainty. Ms. Gamble, who helped keep me on track emotionally and mentally when I was struggling with my grades and personal challenges. Ms. Cahill, who throughout all four years encouraged me and believed in my potential, she told me early on she saw me becoming someone great and that I would always have her support. Those words stayed with me throughout high school. I still remember how much that meant to me at a time when I was still figuring myself out.

Even with that support, growth still came with challenges. During my sophomore year, I went through a situation with someone I once considered my best friend, where a joke went too far and changed the dynamic of our friendship. That taught me that growth sometimes means stepping away from people who no longer bring out the best in you. I also think back to my freshman year, surrounded by friends whom I started this journey with. Over time, those friendships changed as we grew in different directions, but I also found new people who helped shape who I am today, reminding me that growth is also about what you gain, not just what you lose.

Looking forward,  I’m ready to understand what it means to be independent. I want to take everything North Brunswick Township High School has given me and use it as the foundation to build my future. As the Class of 2026 moves forward, I realize something simple: we are not defined by our flaws, we are defined by the paths we choose to carve ahead.
