ALEXA VALLE, Contributing Writer At North Brunswick Township High School, the AVID program helps students prepare for college and life after high school.
AVID is a four-year college and career readiness program that supports students with academic growth and personal development. The goal of AVID is to help students gain the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to plan their future.
Ms. Dina Fleming, a former English teacher and the AVID advisor, explained that AVID “helps students in many different ways because every student is different.”
Some students learn how to speak up for themselves and challenge themselves by taking harder classes. Others improve their study skills, organization, and time management. AVID also provides a support system where students feel encouraged by teachers and classmates.
AVID is different from other classes because it is an elective, and students can choose to participate in the program. AVID students commit to improving themselves each year. The class offers one-on-one support, leadership opportunities, and lessons that go beyond regular schoolwork. Students, especially seniors, hear from guest speakers, go on college tours, and receive help with college and scholarship applications.
When students struggle, Ms. Fleming makes sure they are supported. She helps students set goals, improve study habits, and work through challenges. She also listens when students need someone to talk to and helps them find other support if needed.
AVID seniors Alfreda Conteh and Michela Martinez shared how important the program has been for them. Conteh said that AVID gave her "guidance in areas she didn't even know she needed assistance in."
Martinez described AVID as a "helpful stepping stone that teaches life lessons and prepares her for college and the future."
As seniors, their AVID work focuses of college preparation. They work on essays, financial aid, college applications, and learning what the future holds for them. Both seniors agreed that AVID is very important.
Conteh stated, "All students should have the chance to be in AVID because it provides extra help and mentors."
Michela said, "AVID helps students feel prepared for their future."
Overall, AVID helps students feel supported, prepared, and confident as they plan their next steps in the world.
