Senior Class Speaker: McKenna Rizk

What advice would you give to younger students that you wish someone gave to you?

My advice is to stop worrying so much about what others may think of you. It sounds cliché, but the only way to live a contented and fulfilling life is to live it exactly how YOU want. Don’t do things to please others.

Who inspired/encouraged/guided you throughout your journey at NBTHS? How?

My mom guided me throughout my years at NBTHS. My wonderful mother helped me study, gave me relationship advice, and taught me many life lessons over the years. She guided me through many hardships, and I wouldn’t be here today without her.

What college are you planning to attend and what will be your major? Why did you choose this school/major?

I am attending California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. I am majoring in nutrition. I chose this school because of its “learn by doing” philosophy and the beautiful location of the school. It is nestled in the mountains and only 15 minutes from the beach. I am majoring in nutrition because I have always been interested in the health and wellness sphere.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself living in an apartment in Brooklyn, NYC, with two corgis. I see myself working in the corporate field as a registered dietitian.

What was your favorite memory from your time at NBTHS?

My favorite memory at NBTHS is winning the talent show during my junior year.

How do you feel about graduating?

I am beyond excited to move on to this next chapter of life. I’ve been “California dreaming” since sophomore year, so I am ecstatic. However, it will be bittersweet because I am leaving my amazing friends who have gotten me through high school.

What has been the biggest challenge throughout your high school career?

My biggest challenge throughout high school has been dealing with OCD. It makes it very hard to balance school, activities, and everyday life.

What advice would you give to anyone hoping to earn your same achievement?

Make your speech about something you are passionate about. Speak about a topic that truly matters to you and create a message that reflects who you are.

Were you involved in any clubs or sports? If so, how did you manage to maintain good grades throughout the year?

I was involved in German Club since sophomore year and served as president during my senior year. I was also involved in Key Club since freshman year. I competed in pole vault during freshman and sophomore year and participated in rock climbing throughout high school. I maintained my grades by practicing time management and using my limited free time to complete work early.

What do you think the biggest challenge students will face in the future?

The rise of AI is going to be a huge obstacle for the next generation. There is going to be a big issue with deciding whether to push yourself and use critical-thinking skills or take the easy route and use AI. Hopefully the next generation has the discipline to use their own brains.

What is your favorite memory from the 2024-2025 school year?

My favorite memory from the 2024-2025 school year is my German class. We were all very close and were one big family.
